Indiana, the Hoosier State, is located in the midwestern region of the United States and is considered one of the Great Lake States. The state's name means "Land of the Indians". The Indiana Territory, which existed from 1800 to 1816 when Indiana become a state, was the first new territory created from the lands of the Northwest Territory and originally included areas that would become the states of Illinois and Wisconsin, and parts of Michigan, Ohio, and Minnesota.

Indiana is bordered to the north by Michigan and Lake Michigan, to the east by Ohio, to the south by Kentucky, and to the west by Illinois.

The state consists of three distinct regions. The north is dominated by the presence of the city of Chicago in Illinois. The northwest counties are considered suburbs of the city, and the rest of northern Indiana largely serves as a transportation corridor from the east to Chicago. The central region is characterized by the state's capital and largest city, Indianapolis. Southern Indiana has a more varied topography due to its proximity along the Ohio River Valley.

Indiana has a humid continental climate with hot summers and cold winters. Blizzards are not uncommon in the winter and summer thunderstorms can be fierce.

Indiana's economy is largely based on manufacturing. Northwest Indiana is one of the largest steel producing areas in the country. Corn and soybeans are the state's major cash crops. With ports on Lake Michigan in the north and the Ohio River in the south, products from Indiana can be shipped by water around the world.

Indiana is represented in two professional sports leagues: the Indianapolis Pacers (NBA) and the Indianapolis Colts (NFL). College basketball, however, is probably the dominent sport in the state. Auto racing's premier annual event, the Indianapolis "Indy" 500, is held over the Memorial Day weekend.
